Guttering & Downpipes
Gutters cleared, repaired and replaced in uPVC, aluminium or cast iron to keep rainwater away from your walls.
How we can help
Gutters are easy to ignore until water is running down your walls and damp is coming through inside. We clear, realign, repair and replace guttering and downpipes, sized and fitted to actually cope with Scottish rainfall.
A blocked or undersized gutter is one of the most common causes of damp we're called out to investigate, and it's often mistaken for a roof leak when the roof itself is fine. Rural properties with mature trees nearby tend to need clearing more often than town properties, and older cast iron systems need regular painting to stop them rusting through at the joints, something worth factoring in when deciding whether to repair or replace.
See the difference

What’s covered
Guttering is behind a fair bit of the damp we get called out to look at, with the roof itself turning out to be perfectly fine. Rainwater has to get away from the building, and when it can't, it goes into your walls instead.
Clearing and repairs
Gutters cleared out, brackets refixed, falls corrected so the water actually runs to the downpipe instead of sitting in the middle of the run, and leaking joints sealed or renewed. On a lot of the jobs we go to, that's the whole fix.
Full replacement
New guttering and downpipes in uPVC, aluminium or cast iron, sized for the rain we actually get here rather than the bare minimum. Cast iron suits traditional and listed properties, aluminium lasts without the upkeep, uPVC is the sensible cost-effective option on most homes.
Keeping it clear afterwards
Gutter guards where there are mature trees nearby and getting up there every autumn isn't realistic. Downpipes rerouted where they're discharging somewhere daft and soaking a wall or a path.
We check your guttering as standard on every roofing job we do, because a roof isn't watertight if the water has nowhere sensible to go once it's off it.
Signs you need this
Guttering problems usually show up on your walls rather than your roof. Look out for:
- Water overflowing from the gutter during heavy rain instead of draining away
- Green or black streaks running down an outside wall
- A gutter sagging or pulling away from the fascia
- Damp patches appearing inside near an external wall
- Plants or moss visibly growing in the gutter
- Pooling water at the base of a downpipe

Questions about guttering
At least once a year, more often if you're near trees. Blocked gutters are one of the most common causes of damp we see on call-outs, and it's a cheap job compared to the water damage it prevents.
