Slate Roofing
Traditional slating for the region's older stock: sympathetic repairs, re-slating and matching reclaimed slate.
How we can help
A lot of the housing stock in Dumfries & Galloway is traditional slate, and it deserves roofers who know how to work with it. We repair and re-slate using methods and materials that suit the building, including sourcing reclaimed slate to match what's already there.
Natural slate is a different job from a modern slate-look tile: the fixings, the laps and the detailing around valleys and hips all follow traditional methods that a lot of newer roofers simply haven't been trained in. Done properly it's also remarkably long-lived, a well-maintained natural slate roof can outlast the house it's on by generations, it's usually the nails and battens underneath that fail long before the slate itself does.

What’s covered
Slate is its own trade. The laps, the fixings and the detailing round valleys and hips follow traditional methods that a lot of roofers were never taught, and it tends to show within a few winters when they haven't been.
Repairs and re-slating
Anything from a handful of slipped slates up to a full re-slate. Nail sickness is the common one round here: the slate itself is perfectly sound but the fixings have rusted through, and that's often a re-fix using the existing slate rather than a replacement, which saves you a considerable amount.
Matching what's already there
We source reclaimed slate to match the colour, size and texture of your roof, and where that isn't possible we'll show you the closest new option before ordering anything. A patch that doesn't match is more obvious than the gap it filled.
Lead work and detailing
Lead around chimneys, dormers and abutments, traditional ridge and verge detailing, and roof windows cut into existing slate and dressed so they look like they were always there rather than bolted on afterwards.
Looked after, a natural slate roof will outlast all of us. It's nearly always the nails and battens that fail first, not the slate, which is why re-fixing is so often the honest answer.
Signs you need this
Slate gives you plenty of warning before it becomes a real problem. These are the ones worth acting on:
- Individual slates slipping or sliding out of position
- Nail sickness: slates that look fine but move in the wind, held by a single fixing
- Missing slates leaving gaps you can see from the ground
- Cracked slates letting water track underneath onto the felt
- Slates coming away from lead flashing at a valley or hip
- An original roof that's never been properly checked
