Nail sickness and failing fixings
Nail sickness is one of the most common problems on older slate roofs in the region. When the nails securing the slates corrode and fail, the slates themselves are often still sound. Where they remain serviceable, it may be possible to retain and re-fix them rather than replace the entire covering, subject to the condition of the roof structure.
Leadwork, flashings and roof junctions
Leadwork around chimneys, dormers, valleys and abutments plays an important role in preventing water ingress. We repair and replace leadwork and flashings, and address deterioration at ridges, verges, valleys and hips to keep these vulnerable junctions weatherproof.
Roof windows
We install roof windows into existing slate roofs, with appropriate detailing around the opening to maintain weatherproofing.

Signs your slate roof needs attention

- Slipped or loose slates: Slates moving out of position, often because their fixings have corroded and failed (nail sickness).
- Missing or broken slates: Exposed areas where water can enter the roof structure.
- Leaks around roof junctions: Water ingress around chimneys, valleys, dormers or abutments may indicate failing flashing or defective detailing.
- Dampness in the loft: Water staining, damp timbers or signs of rot can indicate a leak or deterioration within the roof structure.
- Recurring problems: Repeated slipped slates or leaks may indicate that more extensive repairs or re-slating are needed.
