Not every roof needs replacing. Where the damage is localised and the existing roof remains in suitable condition, a targeted repair can be the most practical solution.
We assess the affected areas, identify visible defects and explain our recommendations. If we find more extensive deterioration, we’ll discuss whether further repairs or a replacement would be more suitable.

Most repair work starts with establishing where the water is getting in, which is not always where it shows inside.
Finding the source of a leak
A damp patch on a ceiling doesn’t necessarily mean the defect is directly above it. Water can travel along the roof structure before entering the property. The cause may be a slipped slate, damaged flashing around a chimney, a defective roof junction or a drainage problem.
We assess accessible areas to identify the likely source of the leak. If further investigation is needed, we’ll explain this before proceeding with the work.
The repair itself
We carry out a range of roof repairs, including:
- Replacing or refixing slipped, cracked and missing slates and tiles
- Repairing or renewing lead flashing around chimneys, valleys and roof junctions
- Patching damaged roofing felt or membrane where suitable
- Repairing localised damage to other roof components
We use materials suited to the existing roof and match them as closely as practical, including reclaimed slate for older properties where appropriate.
Ridge re-bedding and repointing
Most ridge tiles are bedded in sand and cement mortar. Over time the mortar cracks and breaks down, ridge tiles work loose, and in high winds they can lift or come off. We lift loose ridge tiles, clean them off, and re-bed and repoint them in fresh mortar, replacing any that are cracked or missing.
Dry ridge systems
A dry ridge replaces the mortar with a mechanical fixing. The ridge tiles are screwed and clipped down over a ventilated, weatherproof roll, so there’s no mortar to crack or wash out. We can fit a new dry ridge as an alternative to re-bedding, either when repairing an existing ridge or as part of a re-roof.
Verge repointing and re-bedding
The verge is the sloping edge of the roof at the gable end, usually finished with mortar under the edge tiles or slates. When that mortar cracks and falls away, the edge can loosen and let wind-driven rain in. We rake out failed mortar, re-bed loose edge tiles and repoint the verge.
Dry verge systems
A dry verge does away with verge mortar altogether. Interlocking caps are fixed mechanically along the gable edge, covering and securing the ends of the tiles. We can fit a new dry verge as an alternative to repointing, either on an existing roof or as part of a re-roof.
What happens after the repair?
Where available, we’ll provide photographs of the defects identified and the completed work. If we find signs of more extensive deterioration, we’ll explain what we’ve found and discuss the options with you.

What can happen if roof damage is left untreated?
A slipped tile or small defect might not appear urgent, but water entering through damaged roof coverings can cause further problems over time. Depending on the location and severity, untreated damage may lead to:
- Damp patches and damage to ceilings or internal walls
- Deterioration of roof timbers
- Damage to insulation and roofing materials
- Mould and persistent damp smells
- More extensive repairs if water continues to enter the property
Not every defect requires immediate major work, but identifying the cause early can help prevent avoidable damage.

Look out for:
- Damp patches or water stains on ceilings and upper walls

- Slates or tiles lying in the garden or gutters
