Kirkcudbright's centre is a conservation area of colour-washed eighteenth and nineteenth-century houses, much of it close-packed around the harbour and under natural slate. On a roof that means two things at once: the detailing has to suit the building and the street, and the exposure has to be taken seriously, because the town sits on the Dee estuary with salt air and onshore wind working at fixings, flashings and mortar year round.
